Girls "AA" Basketball: January 15th-23rd 2012

As we continue our march to the state tournament at Frost Arena in Brookings, let's take a look at how the teams did last week.

(records good through 1/23/12)

Mitchell Kernels (11-1)  They are riding a six game winning streak. They last lost on Jan 2nd at Lincoln. During the winning streak they are holding opponents to 40 ppg.

SF Washington Warriors (9-2) They are back on track after a tough loss to Mitchell. Their next three games are verses intra city rivals. Sarah Zirpel is averaging 11 ppg and Emma Hanson 10 ppg.

Aberdeen Central Eagles (9-2) They also lost a tough game by three points to the Kernels but have won two straight. Sam Knecht, Brynn Flakus and Kelcy Schaunaman played well in their win verses the Brandon Valley Lynxs on the road.

Brandon Valley Lynxs (9-3) After losing two straight to top teams Aberdeen and Mitchell the Lynxs went out west and got two wins over RC Central and RC Stevens. In those wins Allison Koehn and Lexi Hoover played really well. The Lynxs have a rematch with Mitchell on 1/26/12 at the Corn Palace.

Yankton Gazelles (7-4) After winning four in a row and beating SF Roosevelt the Gazelles lost a heart breaker 47-45 to RC Central on a last second shot by Tori Holt. They look to rebound this week against top rated Mitchell and O'Gorman.

SF Roosevelt Rough Riders  (9-4) Nice road win at O'Gorman to stay in 1st place in the district. Another district opponent this week in Watertown on Tuesday and they close out the week at home verses Washington.

O'Gorman Knights (8-5) The Knights had their seven game winning streak snapped by the Riders last week. They travel south this week to take on Sioux City East and Yankton. Chandler Nielsen is averaging 16 ppg since coming back from her injury.

Watertown Arrows (6-5) In a win over the Brookings Bobcats Tia Hemiller had 19 points, 9 rebounds and 7 steals for the Arrows. If they want to stay with the Knights and Riders in a close district they must find help from their bench and other starters on the floor.

SF Lincoln Patriots (5-4) The Patriots played really well against Mitchell and Marshall, Mn. Darby Hugunin had 30 and 31 points in those games. She needs help from the rest of the starters and from the bench if the Patriots want to compete with the top teams in the state.

RC Central Cobblers (6-6) In their lost to Brandon Valley the starting five in that game combined for 13 points on great defense by the Lynxs. They turn around the next day and beat Yankton on a last second shot by Tori Holt.

RC Stevens Raiders (4-7) It has been a disappointing year so far for the Raiders. The one bright spot has been 6'2 USD recruit Margaret McCloud. She scored her 1000 point in her career in a win over the Sturgis Scoopers earlier this month.

Midseason Report "AA" Girls Basketball

Wow! Where does the time go? It's hard to believe that we are at the halfway point of the high school basketball season. Let's take a look at the teams I think have a chance to cut down the nets at Frost Arena on March 10th, 2012.

(records are good through 1/13/12)

Mitchell Kernels (9-1)  This team was playing well without Macy Miller in the lineup and now with her back it makes this team even more dangerous. Look out for the Kernels come March.

Washington Warriors (6-2) This young team is playing really well right now and only going to get better as the season moves along. Don't count out a Nate Malchow coached team come March.

Brandon Valley Lynxs (7-1) The reigning champs are back and looking to repeat! With Heidi Hoff  (25 ppg) and Allison Koehn (10 ppg) leading the way the Lynxs are well on their way to a repeat performance.

Aberdeen Central Eagles (7-1) The Eagles are riding a 7 game winning streak after losing to the Lynxs the first game of the season. 5 of those wins coming on the road. They are holding their opponents to 39 points per game this season.

SF Roosevelt Rough Riders (8-3) If the Riders can stop teams on their full court press they are a really dangerous team. They have a really tough schedule to end the season.

Yankton Gazelles (5-3) The Gazelles are playing really well right now without jr Mikala Hora. Tory Gross, Emily Fedders and Chloe Cornemann have keep the Gazelles in the hunt in a really tough district.

O'Gorman Knights (7-4) After a slow start the Knights have a 5 game winning streak and are hitting their stride. With key players coming back from injury they can make a strong run in the 2nd half of the season.

Lincoln Patriots (4-3) After back to back 30 point performances from Darby Hugunin, she has lead the Patriots this season. Along with Cera Ledbetter and Mica Standing Soldier the Patriots are looking for a strong 2nd half to the season.

Watertown Arrows (4-4) Anytime you have Tia Hemiller and Savannah Gravatt in the lineup you have a chance. The Arrows will need more play from their role players in the 2nd half of the season.

RC Stevens Raiders (3-5) It has been a disappointing start to the season for the Raiders. Margaret McCloud and Katie Klapprodt have lead the way for this team.

Inside the numbers:
