2009 Chargers Basketball

2009-10 Chargers Basketball

October 2009

I was introduced to the 7th grade girls as their basketball coach and it changed my life forever! I couldn't have done it alone and want to thank Jaime (Haverly) Weeks for helping me during that season. It was during that season that I met someone that changed my life.

Allison Brooks & Alyssa Vollmer

A girl and a family that left us way to soon. Jim, Julie, Alyssa and Caleb Vollmer were killed in a car accident in February. A family that welcomed me to the Sioux Falls Christian Community with open arms and always made sure that I was doing ok during the season. They were always there to help out where ever and when ever needed. One of my favorite memories from that season was our service project we did as a team. The girls made blankets for different organizations in Sioux Falls. Julie Vollmer was there that day helping out and  making sure the girls got something to eat before we delivered the blankets. She also made sure we all had rides to each of the places we had to go.

Her daughter Alyssa was the point guard on that team. She was a born leader and always had the right things to say to the girls. Her smile is what I am going to miss the most! She was shy at first but once she got comfortable with the team and coaches she ran the show like a pro. We started out the season 7-0 and ended the year at 9-5. We took 2nd in the conference tournament losing in the championship game by 3 to a team that beat us earlier in the season (Tri-Valley) by 17. I am so proud of the girls and the way the season worked out.

Alyssa and that team taught me a lot that season. It's not about the wins and losses, its about first giving glory to God in EVERYTHING you do and having faith in him. Also something that I admired a great deal about Alyssa was her faith. She loved God and wasn't afraid to show it. She instilled confidence into the team and it showed as we got better as a team throughout the season. The one thing that you could ask for from a coach is effort and heart and this team definitely had it! I loved coaching this team and am going to miss my starting point guard every day! I know your playing basketball somewhere with your brother! Rest in peace Alyssa, Jim, Julie and Caleb! You will be missed! Can't wait to see you someday soon! Coach Les

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the path of righteousness
For His name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD
Forever.

Who's back on top this week?

We have one week to go in the girls AA regular season before districts start next Monday night February 25th, 2013. The Mitchell Kernels come into the week as the hottest team winning their 12th in a row on Saturday, Feb 16th. Kerri Young had 25 points and Macy Miller had 23 for the SDSU recruits but it was also Kristen Sabers 17 points that helped them to the victory 80-52 over the Huron Tigers.

Aberdeen Central bounced back in a big way this week after their loss to Mitchell by beating SF Roosevelt 62-54 on the road and beating BV at home behind 21 pts and 9 rebounds from Sami Knecht 66-37.

SF Washington was coming off a sweep of the Rapid City schools and looking forward to playing city rivals SF Roosevelt on Friday. The Riders jump out to an 8 point lead after the 1st quarter and hung on to win 70-63. Lauren Kunz had 17pts for the Riders. The Riders travel to SF Lincoln on Tuesday before closing out the regular season at home on Thursday hosting Marshall, Mn. The Warriors also travel to cross town rival SF O'Gorman to end the regular season.

No more undefeated teams

With only two weeks to go in the regular season for AA girls the last undefeated team (Aberdeen Central) lost on the road to the Mitchell Kernels on Friday night. (2/8/13) Kerri Young and Macy Miller lead the way again for the Kernels like they have all season. Young had 24 points and Miller had 20 points for the SDSU recruits. Mitchell hasn't lost since back to back losses to Washington and Aberdeen at the beginning of January. The Kernels have SF Lincoln, Huron and Yankton to close out the regular season.

The Washington Warriors (17-1) are coming off a sweep of the Rapid City schools this past weekend and look poised to make another run. Syd Koel had 17 points in their win on Friday night vs RC Stevens. They close out the regular season with road games at SF Roosevelt and SF OGorman.

SF Roosevelt sits in first place in district 1 with 13 wins. They last played on Feb 1st at Brookings and have a tough schedule to finish out the regular season. Three of their next four games will be at home with a road game at SF Lincoln. They host Aberdeen Central on Tuesday, (2/12/13) and SF Washington on Friday, (2/15/13)

Here are the District standings as of 2/10/13

New #1 in AA girls basketball?

After the ESPN 99.1/Kelo/KBHB polls came out we have a new number one... Sort of... After their victory Friday night the Golden Eagles of Aberdeen Central (13-0) claim a tie for #1 with SF Washington (13-1). In the win for the Eagles Samantha Knecht had 18 points and 7 rebounds and Brynn Flakus had 17 points vs the Sturgis Scoopers. They have 6 games left on their schedule to run the table but have to play at Mitchell and at SF Roosevelt to close out the regular season.

For the Warriors they also have 6 games remaining on their schedule. They have a tough schedule to end the season; O'Gorman twice and at SF Roosevelt. After coming off the loss to Lincoln and being down by 14 to the Riders they had a great second half and a good start vs Bellevue East to win two straight. They also have Emma Hanson back in the lineup after she missed two games (Lincoln, and Roosevelt) with a concussion.

Mitchell is right on the heels of everyone else with 7 of their last 9 games at home. Kerri Young and Macy Miller have been playing great and the defense has been outstanding holding teams to under 30 points (29.25) in the last 4 games.

Three teams that have been flying under the radar a little bit this season are SF Roosevelt (12-3), SF Lincoln (8-4) and SF O'Gorman (10-6) The injury to Darby Huginin hurts the Patriots. Darby is out with a broken arm she got chasing a loose ball during the win vs SF Washington on Tuesday Jan 22nd.  She had surgery Friday and got 6 screws and a plate put in and is likely done for the season.

The Roosevelt loss to Washington on Friday stopped a 7 game winning streak. They have to travel to Brookings on Friday before hosting Aberdeen Central and Washington in Febuary.

The O'Gorman Knights have 4 games remaining in the regular season with a big test on the road at SF Washington Thursday night. (1/31/13) Three out of the next four games are at home for the knights so it's important to get momentum going into district play.

A new #1 in girls AA?

Who deserves to be the #1 team in class AA with #5 SF Lincoln's upset over previous #1 SF Washington last night 44-39?  Let's take a look at the teams that can make the case:

Aberdeen Central (12-0) They have been playing great all season with the inside and outside game. They can go inside the paint to Samantha Knect and Sara Niederbaumer and they have the outside game to go with it. Brynn Flakus and Kelsey Hanningan have been playing well all season.  They have some tough games on their schedule coming up with a trip to Mitchell and SF Roosevelt right before the district tournament.

Mitchell (9-2) They have rebounded nicely from their back to back losses at SF Washington and Aberdeen Central with 4 straight wins. In those wins they are averaging just over 70 points a game (71.25) and holding opponents to just under 30 points per game. (71.25) Kerri Young and Macy Miller continue to play at an all-state level.

SF Roosevelt (12-2) The Riders have a 7 game winning streak going and have not lost in the new year. The last seven games they have been averaging 60 points per game while holding opponents to 35 points a game. Paige Mriden and Lauren Kunz have provide the leadership for the Riders this season and Tagyn Larson is playing some great basketball both offense and defense for this team. A big test for this team coming up with SF Washington twice and Aberdeen Central yet on the schedule.

SF Washington (11-1) Winners of 11 out of the last 12, playing great swarming team defense holding teams to 33 points per game. A tough schedule the rest of this week as they host SF Roosevelt on Friday (1/25/13) and Bellevue East, NE on Saturday(1/26/13).

A look at the District standings for girls AA as of 1/23/13

District #1
SF Roosevelt       12-2
SF OGorman          8-6
Watertown            3-9
Brookings            2-10

District #2
SF Washington     11-1
SF Lincoln                7-3
Brandon Valley       4-9
Yankton                   2-8

District #3
Aberdeen Central  12-0
Mitchell                     9-2
Pierre                         5-5
Huron                      2-11

District #4
RC Central              6-5
RC Stevens            3-8
Sturgis                    4-8
Douglas                 5-6

Looking Ahead:

SF Lincoln (7-3) @ Brandon Valley (4-9) 1/24/13 7:30pm ESPN 99.1 FM and espn991.com with Brad Peterson

How do the Patriots respond to the loss of point guard Darby Huginin, who was lost last game to a broken wrist in the win vs SF Washington. BV is coming off a 6 point loss in overtime to RC Stevens. In that game Allie Koehn had 25 point but the only Lynx player in double figures. Some keys for both teams. For BV being able to shut down the post play of Cera Ledbetter and rebounding. For Lincoln its taking care of the basketball and having someone step up in Darby's place.
