New #1 in AA girls basketball?

After the ESPN 99.1/Kelo/KBHB polls came out we have a new number one... Sort of... After their victory Friday night the Golden Eagles of Aberdeen Central (13-0) claim a tie for #1 with SF Washington (13-1). In the win for the Eagles Samantha Knecht had 18 points and 7 rebounds and Brynn Flakus had 17 points vs the Sturgis Scoopers. They have 6 games left on their schedule to run the table but have to play at Mitchell and at SF Roosevelt to close out the regular season.

For the Warriors they also have 6 games remaining on their schedule. They have a tough schedule to end the season; O'Gorman twice and at SF Roosevelt. After coming off the loss to Lincoln and being down by 14 to the Riders they had a great second half and a good start vs Bellevue East to win two straight. They also have Emma Hanson back in the lineup after she missed two games (Lincoln, and Roosevelt) with a concussion.

Mitchell is right on the heels of everyone else with 7 of their last 9 games at home. Kerri Young and Macy Miller have been playing great and the defense has been outstanding holding teams to under 30 points (29.25) in the last 4 games.

Three teams that have been flying under the radar a little bit this season are SF Roosevelt (12-3), SF Lincoln (8-4) and SF O'Gorman (10-6) The injury to Darby Huginin hurts the Patriots. Darby is out with a broken arm she got chasing a loose ball during the win vs SF Washington on Tuesday Jan 22nd.  She had surgery Friday and got 6 screws and a plate put in and is likely done for the season.

The Roosevelt loss to Washington on Friday stopped a 7 game winning streak. They have to travel to Brookings on Friday before hosting Aberdeen Central and Washington in Febuary.

The O'Gorman Knights have 4 games remaining in the regular season with a big test on the road at SF Washington Thursday night. (1/31/13) Three out of the next four games are at home for the knights so it's important to get momentum going into district play.

A new #1 in girls AA?

Who deserves to be the #1 team in class AA with #5 SF Lincoln's upset over previous #1 SF Washington last night 44-39?  Let's take a look at the teams that can make the case:

Aberdeen Central (12-0) They have been playing great all season with the inside and outside game. They can go inside the paint to Samantha Knect and Sara Niederbaumer and they have the outside game to go with it. Brynn Flakus and Kelsey Hanningan have been playing well all season.  They have some tough games on their schedule coming up with a trip to Mitchell and SF Roosevelt right before the district tournament.

Mitchell (9-2) They have rebounded nicely from their back to back losses at SF Washington and Aberdeen Central with 4 straight wins. In those wins they are averaging just over 70 points a game (71.25) and holding opponents to just under 30 points per game. (71.25) Kerri Young and Macy Miller continue to play at an all-state level.

SF Roosevelt (12-2) The Riders have a 7 game winning streak going and have not lost in the new year. The last seven games they have been averaging 60 points per game while holding opponents to 35 points a game. Paige Mriden and Lauren Kunz have provide the leadership for the Riders this season and Tagyn Larson is playing some great basketball both offense and defense for this team. A big test for this team coming up with SF Washington twice and Aberdeen Central yet on the schedule.

SF Washington (11-1) Winners of 11 out of the last 12, playing great swarming team defense holding teams to 33 points per game. A tough schedule the rest of this week as they host SF Roosevelt on Friday (1/25/13) and Bellevue East, NE on Saturday(1/26/13).

Looking Ahead:

SF Lincoln (7-3) @ Brandon Valley (4-9) 1/24/13 7:30pm ESPN 99.1 FM and espn991.com with Brad Peterson

How do the Patriots respond to the loss of point guard Darby Huginin, who was lost last game to a broken wrist in the win vs SF Washington. BV is coming off a 6 point loss in overtime to RC Stevens. In that game Allie Koehn had 25 point but the only Lynx player in double figures. Some keys for both teams. For BV being able to shut down the post play of Cera Ledbetter and rebounding. For Lincoln its taking care of the basketball and having someone step up in Darby's place.
